The Mealtime Detail Most Parents Overlook

Rachel Wexler

Founder of Recette

As parents, we spend an incredible amount of time thinking about what goes on our children's plates.

We read ingredient labels. We compare snacks. We look for more fruits, more vegetables, less sugar, and fewer artificial ingredients. We celebrate the small victories, a bite of broccoli here, a new food tried there.

But there's one part of mealtime that many of us rarely think about:

The plate itself. I know I didn't.

Like many parents, I assumed that if a product was marketed for children, it had been thoroughly vetted and was unquestionably safe. It wasn't until I became a mother and started searching for dinnerware for my own children that I realized how little I knew about the materials used in the products we put in front of them every day.

What started as a simple shopping decision quickly turned into a deep dive into materials, manufacturing, and product design. I found myself asking questions I had never considered before. What is this plate made from? How does it perform after hundreds of trips through the dishwasher? What happens when it gets scratched, heated, or dropped? Are some materials better choices than others?

The more I learned, the more I realized that the products we use every day deserve the same level of consideration we give the food we serve.

Healthy Feeding Is About More Than Food

The more time I spend talking with parents, pediatricians, and feeding experts, the more I've realized that raising healthy eaters isn't built around one perfect meal.

It's built through routines.

It's sitting down together at the table whenever you can.

It's offering a new food without pressure.

It's serving that same food again tomorrow, even if it wasn't touched today.

It's letting children touch, smell, squish, and explore their food as they learn.

Those everyday moments create confident eaters over time.

That's one of the reasons I admire what the team at GrowHappy is doing. Their philosophy is that introducing allergens isn't one big milestone—it's a series of small, consistent exposures that become part of everyday family meals. It's a reminder that healthy habits are built one meal at a time.

Why the Plate Matters Too

As I researched children's dinnerware, I discovered that not all materials are created equal.

Children use their plates, bowls, and cups multiple times every day for years. Those products become part of family breakfasts, after-school snacks, weekend pancakes, and messy first bites. I wanted to create products that parents could feel good about using every day—products that were thoughtfully designed, durable, and made from renewable plant-based materials.

That journey ultimately became the foundation for Recette.

Like every parenting decision, there isn't one perfect answer. Every material has advantages and tradeoffs. But after extensive research, testing, and countless conversations with experts, I chose a plant-based material because it best aligned with the values that inspired our brand from the beginning: thoughtful design, everyday functionality, and creating products families can use with confidence.

Small Choices Add Up

One of the biggest lessons I've learned as a parent is that wellness is rarely about one grand gesture.

It's built through thousands of small decisions.

Choosing water over soda.

Adding another vegetable to dinner.

Offering allergens consistently after they've been safely introduced.

Making time for family meals.

Selecting products that align with your family's values.

None of these choices alone determines a child's health or happiness. But together, they help create an environment where children can thrive.

Building a Better Family Table

At the end of the day, mealtime is about much more than food.

It's where our children learn to explore new flavors. It's where they build confidence trying unfamiliar foods. It's where they tell stories about their day, laugh with siblings, make spectacular messes, and slowly develop lifelong habits around eating and connection.

The plate itself may seem like a small detail. But when you think about how often it's used, and how many memories are made around it, it becomes clear that the objects we bring into our homes matter, too.

As parents, we spend so much energy thinking about what goes on the plate. The plate itself deserves a little thought as well.

At GrowHappy and Recette, we share a simple belief: healthy children aren't raised by one perfect product or one perfect meal. They're raised through small, intentional choices made consistently over time.

Those everyday moments around the family table may seem ordinary today, but together, they become the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits
